What have been your favorite electives for the dual major?
NUTR 730: Seed to Sea- Sustainable Food Systems was truly eye opening and allowed me to build my understanding of how our food system is integral to all three pillars of sustainability. It was small and tight knit which made for excellent class discussions and featured various people involved in the food system in New England from organizations and research institutions.
RMP 511: Issues of Nature and Wilderness in American Society provided great basis information for sustainability and my primary major itself. It was in a large lecture hall, so quite different from NUTR 730, but I met a lot of people that I am still friends with today.
How have you managed the dual major elective credits?
I’ve been able to double count a lot of my required courses with the electives I needed to take for my major. I also tried to match up my Discovery courses with the SDM electives so I could "kill two birds with one stone” and will have no issues graduating on time.
What are some of the benefits of the dual major?
The SDM gave me access to the Sustainability Institute, which I am now heavily involved with. My first year at UNH I was in the Changemaker Fellowship and a Tobacco, Smoke, and Nicotine Free Intern for the Institute and Health & Wellness. Sophomore year I carried on as a Changemaker Fellow, Intern, and was a Teacher's Assistant for SUST 401. I’m now a Changemaker Coach and have loved the opportunity to lead new students with the lens of sustainability. These experiences have led me to participate in the SVIC, become an Honors Sustainability Fellow, and my off-campus internship last summer at a manufacturing facility.
My favorite thing about the SDM is the people in it. I have made countless friends from all different majors that have really added to my time here at UNH. My advisors and bosses have encouraged me to take steps toward my future goals. Personally, I have grown as a learner and person, and I could not be more grateful to the SDM and Sustainability Institute. Now I am planning on to use both of my majors and design a world for the future that is resilient and sustainable for all.
